WARD MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO FONDA - 8/21/10 By: Ron Szczerba FONDA, NY – Saturday evening Ward was back at Fonda and showed all of the Fonda regulars that he hasn’t forgotten how to get around the Montgomery County Fairgrounds track as he led every lap of the 30-lap modified feature event in the Gypsum Express #42P Bicknell car. The win for Ward was his first at Fonda since the Ice Jam event on April 11, 2009 and his 22nd career win at the Track of Champions. “The car was so bad in the heat race and we made so many changes to it that I didn’t know what to expect from the car or what was going to happen going into the first turn at the start,” Ward said in victory lane. “I was just hoping that I didn’t slip up in turn one on the first lap and get into A.J. (Romano who started on the outside of the front row).” A moment of silence was also observed before the modified feature event in memory of Fonda Speedway Hall of Fame member George Proctor’s wife Harriet who recently passed away. Other winners on W.M. Larned & Sons Night at Fonda on Saturday were David Towns (sportsman), John Scarborough (602 limited sportsman), Roy Fifield (pro stock), Dennis Joslin (street stock), and Dan Krajewski (4-cylinder). Twenty-four cars started the feature event with Ward taking the lead at the drop of the green flag in the caution plagued main event. The first yellow flag was out on lap three for Craig Hanson and Josh Flint who came together in turn four with another yellow on the restart for a “no start” situation. Ward blasted into the lead again when the race restarted with 2010 track champion Bobby Varin making a move from fifth to second with Ryan Odasz now third. A pileup in turn three on lap five brought out the red flag with almost 10 cars involved. The wreck started when something broke on the front end of Elmo Reckner’s car in turn three forcing him to slow quickly. All of the other cars piled in including Jim Davis who lost a wheel and an axle out of the car but fortunately nobody was injured. Through each of the five restarts during the event Ward and Varin would make it a two car battle for the lead as they would pull away and make it their own race with the rest of the field strung out behind them. The track was fast on Saturday evening with low 19 second laps still being turned as the race went on to the checkered flag and it was definitely a race of attrition with only seven cars completing the entire 30-lap distance. Varin ended up second followed by Odasz, Matt DeLorenzo, and Alton Palmer. Continued in news . . . ![]() 2010 Champions - Roy Fifield, George Catanzano, Bobby Varin, (Ric Lucia-Fonda Speedway) David Towns, John Scarborough and Rob VanAernam By: Ron Szczerba FONDA, NY – Fonda Speedway promoter Ric Lucia started the Night of features format at the Fonda Speedway when he took over the helm at the Track of Champions back in 1997. The format is a tough one as double features can either make or break you if you are in the hunt for the point title but it sure is an exciting evening for the fans. Emotions also play a big part in the evening as the champions are crowned and those who have not been fortunate enough to get a feature win yet are trying to get to victory lane to make their season a success. Saturday evening at the Fonda Fairgrounds emotions were high especially in victory lane after a feature win or a championship celebration. Ryan Odasz was the recipient of some good luck in the first modified feature event on Saturday evening while it was just the opposite for A.J. Romano as Romano shredded a right rear tire in turn four of the final lap while leading allowing Odasz to get by for the win in the Besco Metals sponsored Teo car. In the second feature Romano redeemed himself and took home his second win of the season in the North Norwich Motors sponsored Troyer car on his son Adam’s birthday with A.J. himself set to celebrate his birthday on Sunday. “I had nothing for A.J. and as far as I am concerned he was the winner of this race but I’ll collect the money for him though,” Odasz said jokingly in victory lane. “I really didn’t see his right rear tire blow but I did notice that I gained a lot of ground on him in just a short amount of time so I knew that something must have happened to A.J.” “I was so disappointed after losing the first race, I was demoralized,” Romano said during his victory lane ceremonies. “I was totally disgusted and there was a lot of damage done to the car when the tire shredded so I have to thank my crew for all of their hard work getting the car ready for the second feature. Wins here at Fonda are so tough to get and to lose one like that was tough.” A 21 gun salute to honor our veterans was performed while the 109th Airlift Wing from Schenectady, NY provided a military flyover. The 104th Fighter Wing from Springfield, MA was also a part of the ceremonies with Roland Guyette singing the National Anthem. Other organizations that were a part of Military Night at Fonda were the VFW Post 2077, the American Legion Post 137, and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 122. BBL Construction Services sponsored the racing program and enhanced the pay off in the modified and 602 limited sportsman division features as well. Other winners on Saturday at Fonda were David Towns who won both sportsman features along with the 2010 track championship, Adam McAuliffe and Robert Bublak in the 602 limited sportsman division with John Scarborough taking the title, Roy Fifield and Rocky Warner in the pro stock division with Fifield the 2010 champion, George Catanzano in the UMP modifieds who also was crowned the 2010 champion, Dave Horning Sr. and Rob VanAernam in the street stock division with VanAernam taking the title.
